Herb Garden Tales
Join me on my peaceful, impromptu, herb garden series, where I will learn about each herb individually and how they interact with those around them.
So, a little earlier this summer I was at Lowes with my partner to get some mulch for our empty garden beds out front of our house. We had plans of filling them with lots of lovely plants and have already started filling them. This story is about the side quest I picked up while waiting for them to drive the mulch home (downside to driving a lil bitty car, it can only hold so much).
I noticed this huge lovely sign saying that all of the herbs were 50% off at least making all of them about $2.00. I got so excited that I grabbed one of each of what they had left. Rosemary, Thyme, Basil, Lavender, Parsley (which did not look the best but I was sure I could bring it back), this adorable little banana pepper plant, a sweet melon and something else I couldn’t remember what at this point in my shopping. Sadly they were out of some of our other favorites and I ended up finding a Chive plant that was not on sale.
After the top of the cart (the place where little kids sit) was filled with lovely little plants I had decided needed to come home with me, my partner called saying when they got back we would need two more bag of mulch and I informed them what fun I had been up to. Now for the record this is my first time shopping at Lowes for plants and this is my partners life pretty much. They have spent most of their time at either HomeDepot or Lowes and knew what I had really done. When it came time for checkout my partner insisted on paying (so sweet) and I decided I would just slip the money into their pocket later….until I saw the receipt! Goodness, what had I done? All of the plants had rang up as full price! Blew my mind. What was supposed to be a mere $25.00 ended up costing over $60.00. I immediately requested we do I refund but my sweet partner said that they knew that, that particular sale was for Lowes members only (I guess it is a paid for membership) and that if they had told me I would have put them all back. They said that they wanted to get them for me because they could tell I was really excited to finally have the lil herb garden I had been dreaming of. Gosh, they are just the sweetest.
All that came down was replanting them. I didn’t have planters or big pots but they were pretty small plants so I decided I would put them all in these cute, old coffee mugs that I had saved just for this type of moment after they had chipped or cracked.
Excited doesn’t really explain how I felt. I was deeply happy, excited but in a calm way. The full cart was of course my Snap streak of the day and the excitement my friends shared only fueled my happiness.
One of my lovely friends decided to send an early birthday gift of so many window boxes for me to use to line my front porch with herbs. Gosh the end view is so pretty. After I clean up all the dirt off the porch I will have to take a full photo.
I spent some time before planting them to make sure they were planted next to things that would help them thrive.
I found that Rosemary, Thyme and Lavender all act as boosters for each other in one way or another. So, they have all found a beautiful home in one of the boxes. At least until they out grow the area of course.
Come to find out the last thing I had grabbed and stuck in my cart was indeed another Parsley. I had thought I decided against it because they did not look too good but come to find out I simply thought that twice. Either way I now have two of them and should be able to nurse both back to health after some research.
Basil and Chives are two of the best things to plant with Parsley so I put one of the dying plants with each and we will see how that goes.
I had already had this precious sweet mint plant for a few weeks but it had been getting eaten outside so I took it inside but after getting all of the other herbs and my daughter insisting I plant her Marigolds I decided to bring it back outside and see what happens.
It was already planted in an adorable giant teacup planter so I ended up just putting it on my outside table. It will be a lovely edition to my outside tarot readings.
Currently, my front porch is like a dream. Herbs surrounding it and I just could not be happier when I walk out of my house or come home.
Stepping outside to take care of them. Brushing the leaves gently while watering them. The air simply smells delightful and my hands stay smelling amazing all day.
I cannot wait to watch them grow and learn about the best ways to care for them.
I would love some really good recipes!
When they are bigger I also need to learn how to properly dry them. Oh my goodness! This means I get to go shopping for some cute jars to store them!!
This lil impromptu herb garden is really a gift that keeps on giving.
